SITE LAYOUT AND TURBINE LOCATION TO OPTIMISE ENERGY OUTPUT

This is an extremely important element of the process of a windfarm development. Using the WAsP analysis of the site the turbines are placed in various different locations to find out the maximum number that can be placed on the site and where they will produce the most energy.

Turbines must be kept a certain distance from the nearest dwellings (350 metres being the minimum). To avoid interference (wake loss) with each other they must be kept 4 or 5 rotor diameters apart (depending on the size of the turbine). Different planning authorities have different regulations concerning distance from the boundaries of the property and these must also be catered for.

Once the turbines have been positioned it is then possible to estimate the total energy output of the turbines. This is then used to make financial predictions for the project. It is also used to find which type of turbine best suits a particular site. If accurate on-site wind speed measurements have been taken then this makes the optimisation and output figures all the more accurate.
